5+ Star
What more can we say. This is so far the best OUT-door FREE playground we have ever visited in Indonesia, unfortunately it is NOT located in Jogja :) This playground is part of the Alun-Alun (square) in the city of Batu, Malang, East Java.
Why do we give it a 5+ (plus) Star?
1. International Standard
2. Clean, They even Recycle!
3. Big Area, The whole square is a playground!
4. Outdoor Fresh Air
5. Multi-Play (Swing, Slide, FerrisWheel, Etc.)
It's more than a city kid can ask for.
Plus, it's FREE!!!
And Cigarette Smoke FREE as well!!!

Griya Persada, Kaliurang
5-Star Playground
We love coming up here although it takes about 45 min drive and 20+ km far from our house, it's worth the trip. Other than seeking the cool and quiet atmosphere of Merapi Mountain, the kids live the playground being in the vicinity of a hotel. Cleanliness is guaranteed, inshaAllah.
We give it 5 stars because:
1. International Standard
2. Clean (not rusty)
3. Very Big (3-story high)
4. Semi-Indoor (has a roof)
5. Multi-Play (playhouse, slide, pool of balls)
Ticket Price per Child: Rp15.000

Babarsari Campground, Sleman
We used to love camping in the States, we never tried once in Qatar since we sold our tent! Good to know there are some organized camping grounds here in Jogja. The places may not be as structured as in the US national parks, complete with numbered camping areas and designated relatively cleaner toilets. However, the natural beauty of a mountainous Merapi area is reflected in Babarsari.
The boys were more interested in playing with water in the river than listening to the lectures about dragonflies on Dragonfly Day held by the International Dragonfly Society.
They were even more excited to see the Army do their practice drills across the river, crawling on their tummy and getting wet.
Lapangan Denggung, Sleman
1 Star
Every province, regency, and village has its own town square marked with a vast field of grass for ceremonies and playing soccer, or just for hanging out in the afternoon. Most squares do not have one, especially the Sultan's Squares (The larger Northern nor smaller Southern Square ~ Alun-Alun Utara ataupun Alun-Alun Selatan). However, some provinces try very hard to provide it for the public, like this one in Denggung.
Sad to say, it's better to stay off the playground and just walk around the field. Thank God, the tetanus vaccine is available here in Indonesia. I'm not sure what the provincial government is prioritizing nowadays. Surely repainting or fixing broken swing for children is not on the list.
It really could be just the heavy rain we get in the tropics that quickly ware down the playgrounds, but maybe we can copy what Qatar has done to theirs due to the extreme Middle Eastern heat. Put up a roof, that will save a lot of painting and repairing, inshaAllah. There is a playground in town that has already done that. Check it out here.
But is weather really culprit, is still a question. How come the one in Batu, Malang is still as good as new. Well, Malang is a cooler place than Yogyakarta and it may not get as much rain as here. Take a look at their Playground in Batu Square, Malang.
Why we give a 1 Star?
1. At least they have the efforts to provide the playground.
(That's a 2 thumbs up! For Sleman!!! Slemania!!!)

Lapangan Ganjuran, Sleman
This is another example of a village square (Lapangan Desa). Like many squares in the villages, they have no infrastructure whatsoever. It is mainly used for school kids to exercise during their morning physical exercise class, or for playing soccer, and grazing animals (usually sheep, goats, and ducks). My kids, they utilize it for Sand Play! No need to go all the way to the beach to get down and dirty with sand.
Lapangan Ganjuran is now known for its Bike Track. The track used to be located on an empty land beside the field, however due to the owner deciding to build a house on it, the committee moved it to the north side of the square. Man-made mounds of sand has been crafted into a mini race track for children. They even have the competition every year now.
The boys love running around the track.
Taman Kuliner, Sleman
2 Star Playground
Jogja built a Culinary Garden near the Condong Catur Terminal but maybe not many know about it. The stalls are mostly empty. Not many want to open their business in this part of town because it is not a strategic location.
Why we gave a 1 Star:
1. Local Standard
2. Rusty
3. Small
4. No Roof
5. Minimal-Play
However it has a large space for a gathering or riding bicycles.
